Contrast-Enhanced Mammography
Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) is now available at The Breast Center at the RWJBarnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center. CME combines conventional digital mammography with the additional benefits of a contrast agent to highlight areas of abnormal blood flow, potentially aiding in the detection of breast cancer. It is used as a supplemental diagnostic tool.
When might CEM be recommended?
A CEM may be recommended for one or more of the following reasons:
- To evaluate indeterminate findings after a screening mammogram.
- For those within 3 years of a lumpectomy for breast cancer.
- As a supplemental diagnostic tool for patients whose breasts have noticeable lumps or nipple discharge.
- As an alternative to breast MRI for those who have a known allergy to MRI contrast, are claustrophobic or have MRI-incompatible implanted devices.
- To determine the extent of disease in a patient with known breast cancer.
- To monitor how well a patient with breast cancer is responding to therapy.
What can I expect?
Before mammographic images are taken, an IV will be placed and contrast slowly infused through the IV line. Your CEM appointment takes approximately the same amount of time as your prior mammogram(s).
CEM involves a slightly higher radiation dose compared to standard mammography, but it remains within safe regulatory limits.
