They made it pleasant to get through something that is not so pleasant. I highly recommend the Steeplechase Cancer Center.
After completing her radiation therapy treatment for breast cancer this month, Renee McFadden celebrated by hitting the gong at the Steeplechase Cancer Center. To further commemorate the milestone, she went on a week-long trip to Oklahoma, completing her quest to visit all 50 states.
Renee’s breast cancer journey began last December after she felt a lump in her right breast. A mammogram and biopsy at the Sanofi US Breast Care Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset confirmed the diagnosis of cancer, which was found at an early stage. RWJUH Somerset together with Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, provides the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options for breast cancer, close to home.
A retired IT project manager, Renee, 68, of Branchburg, underwent six rounds of chemotherapy treatment at the cancer center under the care of medical oncologist Kathleen Toomey, MD. That was followed by surgery, which included a lumpectomy performed by breast surgeon Cynthia Lee, MD and reconstructive surgery by plastic surgeon Priti Patel, MD. Her 20 radiation therapy sessions ended Oct. 13. She is continuing with infusion treatments every three weeks until the end of February.

She was also supported throughout her treatment by oncology dietitian Karen Connelly and nurse navigator Christina Lackey, MSN, RN, CHPN, OCN.
“Everybody at the hospital is just phenomenal. Everyone is so, so helpful and accommodating,” Renee says. “They made it pleasant to get through something that is not so pleasant. I highly recommend the Steeplechase Cancer Center.”
A mother of two and grandmother of three, Renee says she is looking forward to getting back to horseback riding and playing golf and pickleball.
As we mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she reminds everyone to pay attention to changes in their breasts and get their annual mammograms, even if they don’t feel a lump or have a family history of breast cancer.
“As one of my doctors told me, anybody with a breast can get breast cancer,” she said.
No prescription is required to schedule an annual mammogram. Appointments at the Sanofi US Breast Care Program can be scheduled online through MyChart or by calling 908-704-3740. Walk-ins are also accepted.
