We are proud to announce the addition of Richard S. Lazzaro, MD, FACS, to the outstanding thoracic surgery program at RWJBarnabas Health. Dr. Lazzaro is a board certified thoracic surgeon with over 20 years of specialized expertise in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery. He will serve in the newly created role of Southern Region Chief of Thoracic Surgery for RWJBarnabas Health which includes Community Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, providing strategic direction for the health care system and clinical oversight for the thoracic surgery programs at those facilities.
Joining us from Northwell Health, Dr. Lazzaro served as the Director of Thoracic Robotic Surgery and Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Under his leadership, he developed a thoracic surgery program consecutively ranked top 10 in the country for lung cancer surgery outcomes since 2012 as reported by the General Thoracic Surgery Database of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the world’s premier clinical outcomes registry for thoracic surgery.
He attended Albany Medical College and completed his residency at North Shore University Hospital, Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Lazzaro completed postdoctoral fellowship training in minimally invasive thoracic surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as in general thoracic surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
A renowned national leader in the field, Dr. Lazzaro has pioneered many groundbreaking firsts in robotic thoracic surgery and has led one of the largest tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) programs in the nation. Using minimally invasive robotic surgery, he specializes in precise surgical procedures that result in minimal scarring and faster recovery times for patients.
Dr. Lazzaro performs all types of adult thoracic surgery with a particular clinical interest in lung cancer surgery, robotic minimally invasive VATS surgery, esophageal surgery, tracheal surgery, tracheobronchomalacia, tracheobronchoplasty and more.
The addition of Dr. Lazzaro to the RWJBH thoracic service line further strengthens a program that leads the state in innovation and excellence. He will be seeing patients at 67 Route 37 West in Toms River and will also have an upcoming practice site at 200 Wyckoff Road, Suite 1400, in Eatontown. As part of the Combined Medical Group of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health, Dr. Lazzaro will accept most major insurances and is a Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield Omnia Tier-1 designated provider.
