Feb 7, 2018 Monmouth Medical Center's Angela Brathovde, MSN, RN, BC, HNB-BC, Recently Published in the International Journal for Human Caring for Study on Reiki Energy Therapy

LONG BRANCH, NJ – Angela Brathovde, MSN, RN, BC, HNB-BC, was recently published in the International Journal for Human Caring for her research on reiki energy therapy. Her article entitled “Teaching Nursing Reiki Energy Therapy for Self-Care” discusses how Reiki energy therapy benefits both the practitioner and recipient in assisting the body to heal.

The research on Reiki energy therapy stems from her involvement with MMC’s holistic shared governance council, which focuses on integrating the Jean Watson’s Science of Caring theory into the hospital’s organizational culture. To demonstrate how the nurses utilize the theory in their own practice and personal lives, she completed the research study in 2014, sampling 24 nurses from the hospital.

The purpose of her research was to replicate her 2006 pilot study which asked the question: If reiki Level 1 energy therapy were taught to health care providers as a self-care practice, would the perceptions of their own caring behaviors change? The findings of this study suggest nurses can benefit from utilizing self-care practices to provide more compassionate care to patients.

With over 35 years of nursing experience, Angela is the Director of Behavioral Health Education at Monmouth Medical Center. In addition, for the past five years she has been the chair of the corporate holistic council, of which she has been involved with for 10 years. The corporate holistic council is comprised of talented and dynamic nurses from all specialty areas, who have a passion for holistic nursing. The council also provides system-wide “Introduction to Holistic Nursing Conferences” several times throughout the year.

Angela has a MSN in nursing education, and has taught in several nursing programs. Currently, she teaches psychiatric nursing in the BSN program at Monmouth University. She is a certified psychiatric and metal health nurse and certified holistic nurse, and plans to complete her DNP from Chamberlain University in June 2018.
