To commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) hosted its annual day of celebration event on Monday, February 12, 2018. For more than 20 years, the event is held to celebrate Dr. King’s contributions to the world, and to offer inspiration to the surrounding community. The keynote speaker for the program was Lawrence Hamm, community activist and Founder and Chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress (POP), a statewide, independent, grassroots organization which works for racial, social and economic justice and peace.
As Chairman, Hamm has consistently worked to building unity among community organizations. Under his leadership, POP conducted a 381-day campaign of daily protests for jobs, peace, equality, and justice. A native of Newark, New Jersey, Hamm has been involved in activism to achieve positive change since the age of 17.
At the program, the 2018 Sisterhood Award was presented to Trina Parks, MHA, FACHE, Corporate Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, RWJBarnabas Health, Office of the President and the 2018 Brotherhood awards were presented to employees Nyrva Colin, RN and Sandra Lacandalo, RN for actively demonstrating Dr. King’s legacy of service to others.
