Richard H. Savel, MD,MBA,FCCM

Dr. Savel is currently the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Jersey City Medical Center.
Dr. Savel obtained his undergraduate degree with honors in biochemistry at Yale University. He then received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the New York Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, during which time he was Assistant Chief Resident at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This was followed by a multidisciplinary critical care fellowship at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, where he was the recipient of an NIH T32 research training grant focused on acute lung injury and ARDS. He is board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and neurocritical care. He is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. With over 100 publications, Dr. Savel is currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, having previously achieved the rank of Professor of Clinical Medicine & Neurology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
He is a Certified Physician Executive and recently received his MBA with a focus in medical management from UMass Amherst.
He was the co-editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Critical Care from 2010 to 2018 and is currently on the editorial board of Critical Care Medicine, Journal of Critical Care, and Physician Leadership Journal.
Dr. Savel most recently comes from Maimonides Medical Center where he was Director of Adult Critical Care Services and Departmental Vice-Chair for inpatient operations.
