New Jersey Hospital Care for Children

When a child has a medical condition, it can be difficult for them to fully grasp what’s going on and why they need to go to the hospital. This can make the experience frightening and intimidating. We have a team of Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS), who are specially trained to help children and their families feel more comfortable in the hospital.

Having hospital care explained in simple terms from a friendly face can make the experience much less frightening. This is not only important for the child’s emotional well-being, but for their medical care as well, as anxious children have a difficult time sitting still and may even resist the medical staff when they try to administer treatment.

What Does a Child Life Specialist Do?

The Child Life specialists are responsible for supporting the child’s emotional and physical well-being while in the hospital, as well as helping the family members by providing them updates on the child’s status and how they’re handling their time in the hospital. Our Child Life specialists work in the general pediatric inpatient unit, pediatric intensive care unit, hematology/oncology department and the emergency department.

Services

Services provided by our Child Life specialists include:

Qualifications

Our Child Life specialists are required to have an undergraduate degree in child development and complete a 480-hour supervised internship.
