Post Operative Care for Outpatient Genital Surgical Procedures

Circumcision or Revision of Circumcision

  • Bath the next day is ok. Taking a bath is also good to reduce swelling. Swimming in the pool is fine in 3 days. No sports for 5-7 days.
  • Take any medication as prescribed.
  • You don’t need to put anything on the operative site. No dressings, creams or gels. There is a protective glue on the area.
  • Follow up with your urologist in 2 weeks or as directed.

Hernia, Hydrocele or Undescended Testicle Operation

  • Bath the next day is ok. Taking a bath is also good to reduce swelling. Swimming in the pool is fine in 3 days. No sports for 5-7 days.

Meatoplasty

  • Can resume all normal activities the next day.
  • Apply Neosporin to the tip twice a day to keep it moist.
  • Can take a bath or shower the same day.
  • Follow up in the office as directed.

Hypospadias

  • Most of our patients do not go home with a catheter.
  • No bath for 3 days following the surgery. Keep the area dry but you can sponge bath your child.
  • There is a protective glue on the area so you don’t need to put any wraps or bandages on the area.
  • Apply a small amount of Neosporin to the tip where the urine comes out twice a day.
  • On the fourth day, you should put your child in a tub and let him soak for 10 minutes. Do not rub the area.
  • Before your child gets out of the tub, you can do a quick soap wash with a baby soap, just do not wash the surgical area.
  • Blot the area dry. Do not rub the area.
  • Take all medications as directed.
  • Follow up in the office as directed.
