Education and Training

The Cardiac Surgery residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is the only one of its kind in the state of New Jersey. This is an ACGME approved, two-year, traditional Cardiac track residency, started in 2016. The individual that is recruited to be trained, is selected from a pool of eligible candidates from all over the country, through national resident matching program, after rigorous scrutiny. To be eligible, the candidate must have completed a five-year General Surgical Residency following the graduation from medical school. The program provides clinical and technical training in all avenues of cardiac surgery. This is possible because of our exceptional faculty and availability of all cardiac surgical services in the Northern Division hospitals of RWJBH. The participation of CBMC and JCMC has greatly enhanced the experience and exposure for the resident in training. Recent affiliation with Rutgers Biomedical Institute has further strengthened the program by providing academic and research environment. At present, without question, this program is one of the best cardiac surgery residency programs in the country.
