May 22, 2023 JCMC Enhanced Vascular Capabilities with New Hybrid Operating Room

Jersey City Medical Center's new hybrid operating room

The Medical Center’s new hybrid OR delivers innovative treatments for Hudson County residents, speeds patient healing times.

Jersey City, NJ, March 23, 2023 — Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, recently opened a hybrid operating room, which is the first of its kind in Hudson County. This hybrid operating room allows multiple surgical teams to be present in the OR setting at the same time utilizing advanced technologies including real-time imaging. This state-of-the-art technology can speed recovery time and reduce surgical complications for patients.

The hybrid operating room at Jersey City Medical Center includes multiple imaging modalities that show results in real time as vascular surgeons navigate catheters into a patient’s body, which expand treatment options. Safety levels increase because patients can undergo complex procedures that would traditionally be separated into an operating room and a catheterization lab.

“Jersey City Medical Center is proud to have the only hybrid operating room in Hudson County,” said Michael Prilutsky, Executive Vice President for RWJBarnabas Health and President and Chief Executive Officer for Jersey City Medical Center. “We are committed to bringing top-quality medical care to residents throughout the communities we serve. We have top doctors, and we invest in innovations like our hybrid operating room, so patients will experience quicker and safer surgery and shorter recovery times.”

Hybrid operating rooms allow for both open and minimally invasive surgeries, including:

  • Revascularization
  • Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • Vascular intervention
  • Endovascular aneurysm repair
  • Endovascular thoracic (TEVAR) or abdominal (EVAR) aortic repair
  • Stent graft placement
  • Congenital heart disease treatment
  • Coronary artery disease treatment

“A hybrid operating room not only contributes to better outcomes for typical procedures, but also allows for more complex procedures not previously possible, such as branched endovascular aortic repair,” said Michael A. Curi, MD, MPA, and Director of Vascular and Endovascular Services at Jersey City Medical Center. “With this hybrid OR, for example, patients with vascular injury can be treated with minimally invasive therapies, avoiding a larger incision and more blood loss, which leads to a speedier recovery,” added Curi, who also serves as chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and an associate professor of surgery at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University.
