Inpatient Services at Children’s Specialized Hospital
Children’s Specialized Hospital’s (CSH) Inpatient rehabilitation Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility centrally located in New Brunswick, NJ, on the state’s only pediatric academic health care campus. Comprehensive inpatient therapy is provided for children following a serious injury, illness, premature birth, major surgery, chronic illness or pain, or any other life-changing incident.
Our inpatient rehabilitation is specialized for infants through young adults, up through age 21. Each program provides 24-hour medical and nursing care, plus an intensive daily therapy program. The typical length of stay for an inpatient at CSH is 30 days, but this can vary widely based on the diagnosis, child and family, and program.

Inpatient Programs and Services include:
- Brain Injury Center of Excellence provides young patients a broad range of medical care and rehabilitation therapy to address their impairments.. We treat individuals who have acquired a brain injury through physical trauma or medical conditions that affects brain function. The inpatient brain injury program may provide each child with tools and technologies to help with seating and positioning, mobility, communication, self-care, feeding and swallowing. The program treats conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), Cerebral Vascular Accidents (CVA), brain tumors, Hypoxia, anoxic brain injury, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Neurologic effects of cancer treatments, infection (i.e. encephalitis, meningitis), progressive neurologic conditions, Epilepsy and seizure disorders, and disorders of consciousness.
- Burn and Wound Care treats children and adolescents with complex burns and wounds. As a part of the rehabilitation process, scar management and mobility remains a top priority while encouraging independence and function. Our clinical teams are highly skilled in the rehabilitation of conditions resulting from antibiotic resistant bacterial infections, traumatic wounds and burns represented by skin disruption and loss of tissue, muscle and bone, pressure sores, and non-healing surgical wounds related to diabetes, poor nutrition, compromised immunity or infection.
- Chronic Illness Management Program is a comprehensive inpatient program for adolescents and young adults who struggle to manage their medical diagnosis. The program provides a structured, comprehensive treatment plan to address medical, nutritional, psychological, and family communication. Since parents and caregivers have a crucial role in supporting their child’s health, we emphasize parent/caregiver participation in medical education, nutritional and psychological counseling sessions to ensure the greatest success. The principal goal of the program is to ensure a healthy transition back into the community. We help patients work with their outpatient medical treatment team, school, and community-based agencies to ensure success once they return home. Chronic medical conditions treated in this program include Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, HIV/AIDS,pre- and post-organ transplant, along with other chronic medical conditions considered on an individual basis.
- Chronic Pain Management & Functional Neurologic Disorders Center of Excellence (COE) promotes the wellness of adolescents and young adults with chronic pain and functional symptoms by teaching strategies to manage those symptoms and encourage functional activity. The COE is typically for children and adolescents who have significant difficulties with daily function. The goal of the COE is to improve participation in daily activities, increase school attendance, and decrease use of assistive devices. . Our specialized team focuses on treating conditions such as, but not limited to: Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS); Chronic Abdominal Pain; Chronic Migraine Headaches; Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS); Fibromyalgia; Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS); Functional Neurologic Disorder (FND), Functional seizures.
- General Rehabilitation Program provides care for children who have orthopedic needs, neuromuscular disorders and may have experienced multi-complicated trauma. Our program is designed to ensure infants, children and adolescents can transition from acute care for comprehensive rehabilitation based on their individual needs.Comprehensive therapy is provided for a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular disorders and multi-complicated trauma including cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), muscular dystrophies, myopathies, Guillian-barre syndrome (GBS), limb length discrepancies, halo traction, severe spasticity, congenital limb deficiency and deformity, hip dysplasia, spinal dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), spina bifida, amputations, multiple bone factures and injuries, multiple injuries involving the brain and/or spine, and multi-organ compromise and/or failure.
- Infant and Toddler Program provides intensive and comprehensive habilitation and rehabilitation services for infants and young children ages birth to two years with complex medical needs. The program treats children who require all levels of pediatric care, including those who are medically fragile and technology dependent. As part of the Infant and Toddler Program, we care for children with the following: chronic lung disease or airway anomalies (ventilator dependent), medical management of feeding or swallowing difficulties, chromosomal or genetic disorders, short bowel syndrome, Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), small bowel, heart, and other organ transplant, cardiac disease, pulmonary hypertension, Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), complications of prematurity, and, other medically complex conditions.
- Prenatal Substance Exposure/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Program treats newborns affected by exposure to medications, prescription, or illicit drugs in utero. These health effects can include withdrawal effects, gastrointestinal symptoms, disruptive sleep cycles, difficulty achieving and maintaining calm state, increased muscle tone, increased irritability, and feeding challenges and complications.
- Spinal Cord Injury Program provides intensive and comprehensive rehabilitation services for infants, children, and adolescents with acquired, traumatic, and congenital spinal cord dysfunction.. The Spinal Cord Injury Program cares for children with complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries, spinal cord tumors, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, nerve damage, spinal cord stroke, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, halo traction, Guillian-barre syndrome (GBS), ventilator management weaning, and bowl/bladder management.
