Helping Those in Need: NJ Domestic Abuse Support with RWJBarnabas Health

Unfortunately, domestic violence is more common than most people are aware of. But RWJBarnabas Health and our Behavioral Health centers are here to support and treat anyone who may be experiencing any form of this type of violence.

Domestic violence is a term used to describe violence and abuse by family members or intimate partners such as a spouse, former spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend, or date. Other terms used for domestic violence include the following:

  • Intimate partner abuse
  • Family violence
  • Child abuse
  • Battering
  • Courtship violence
  • Marital rape
  • Date rape
  • Stalking

Domestic violence can take many forms, but involves using intimidation and threats or violent behaviors to gain power and control over another person.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, abuse often begins with verbal behaviors such as name-calling, threats, and hitting or throwing objects. It can become worse, including pushing, slapping, and holding against the victim's will. Further battering may include punching, hitting, and kicking and may escalate to life-threatening behaviors such as choking, breaking of bones, or use of weapons.

Every person has a right to live without the fear of violence. If you or someone you know is suffering from any form of domestic violence, measures can be taken to help. Organizations like the National Domestic Violence Hotline, reachable at 800-799-SAFE, can provide useful information and advice for helping someone experience domestic abuse.

The RWJBarnabas Health Access Center is also available for 24-hour consultative support for those looking for assistance with domestic violence. Just call 1-800-300-0628 and learn more about our Crisis Intervention Services available across New Jersey.
