Nissen Fundoplication/Paraesophageal Hernia Repair

Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure to treat “GERD” or gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia. The Nissen fundoplication is total (360°), but partial fundoplications known as Belsey fundoplication (270° anterior transthoracic), Dor fundoplication (anterior 180-200°) or Toupet fundoplication (posterior 270°) are also alternative procedures with somewhat different indications.

In cases where your stomach is located abnormally in your chest causing systems termed a araesophageal/diaphragmatic hernia, the hernia is repaired and a Nissen is added to secure the repair as well as control reflux which is often the cause of the hernia. Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques, including robotics, to perform the procedure. Your surgeon will tell you if you are a candidate.

After Fundoplication/Paraesophageal Hernia Repair

Patients having Fundoplication/Paraesophageal Hernia repair typically stay in the hospital 1-2 days. They have a small tube in their nose draining fluid and gas from your stomach. When the tube is removed (usually same day or surgery if early or the next day), the patient is then started on liquids. They usually have a PCA for pain which is transitioned to oral pain medications when the tube is removed. Patients are encouraged to be out of bed and walk as much as possible. Patients must follow a specific diet after a Nissen fundoplication which his provided by the physician.
