Advanced Esophageal Cancer Care Close to Home

Esophageal cancer starts in your esophagus, which is the pathway that carries food and liquid from your throat to your stomach. Esophageal cancer is considered rare however, the number of people with one of the main types of esophageal cancer, called adenocarcinoma, has risen dramatically in the past few decades.

There are two main types of esophageal cancer:

  • Adenocarcinomas: These cancers start in glandular cells, normally in the lower part of the esophagus. In the U.S. and other Western countries, most esophageal cancers are adenocarcinomas.
  • Squamous cell carcinomas: These cancers start in squamous cells. This type of cancer can start anywhere along the esophagus.

To diagnose esophageal cancer, you may need imaging tests such as CT scan, PET scan, a barium swallow (esophagram) and an upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD). Treatment of esophageal cancer depends on the stage of your disease and may involve surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, or some combination of these. Your treatment options will vary based on how localized or advanced your disease is.

Through our partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, patients have access to the full spectrum of advanced treatment options including complex surgical techniques, clinical trials, precision medicine, immunotherapy, and innovative radiation therapy procedures.
