Disaster Triage & Tier Facility Response

In a disaster, when resources, time and personnel are limited the ability to conduct rapid triage for burn injuries is critical. Once a disaster is declared by The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas medical director or NJ Department of Health and Human Services (DoHHS), burns are triaged in accordance with the American Burn Association Mass Casualty -Benefit-to-Ratio Triage grid.

As initial triage is completed burn patients will be transported to New Jersey hospitals designated by the burn team as a Tier Facility. The role of each Tier Facility is to provide patient stabilization for up to 96 hours of an incident, or until transport may be arranged by The Burn Center.

For information on stabilization and treatment of a burn injury consult First Aid and Emergency Care.
