Upholding a long tradition of innovative treatment and superior care, our accomplished teams of medical professionals treat the whole patient on their journey to wellness. At the forefront of our efforts are our Heart, Vascular, and Thoracic Services.

Our multidisciplinary teams of cardiologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists and nurses lead the way in advanced heart, vascular and thoracic technologies while providing unparalleled care and surgery to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients. Our teams treat our patients with compassion, using the highest standards of comprehensive, evidence-based practices.

Using the newest equipment, techniques and devices for diagnosing and treating structural heart and vascular disease, the heart specialists at CBMC perform onsite cardiac catheterization. Instrumental in diagnosing heart conditions such as arrhythmias or clogged arteries, catheterization involves the placement of a thin tube guided through a blood vessel to the heart. Our innovative catheter-based interventions include:

  • Diagnostic procedures
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention
  • Patent foramen ovale closure
  • Atrial septal defect

And when more invasive cardiac surgery is necessary, you can be confident that you have the best surgeons in your corner.

A notable component of our services is the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in West Orange, New Jersey. For the benefit of our recently hospitalized patients or those undergoing treatment for coronary heart disease, we offer a medically supervised total health and fitness program that helps our patients to take an active role in improving their heart health. Patients who have cardiovascular disease or are recovering from heart surgery or a cardiac procedure may be eligible for cardiac rehabilitation with a physician’s prescription.

Programs and Specialties We Offer

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center offers a spectrum of heart, vascular and thoracic programs and specialties that include, but are not limited to:

  • Advanced Heart Failure/Cardiomyopathy Program. Our program provides clinical services to adults with cardiomyopathy and heart failure on an inpatient as well as an outpatient basis. We offer comprehensive and compassionate care to foster the ideal outcomes from diagnosis to cardiac catheterization to innovative medical and device-based treatments.
  • Aortic Center. CBMC treats the complex aortic diseases of our patients using our collaborative, multidisciplinary model of care. Our professional medical team is composed of experts who lead in the fields of cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery as well as interventional cardiology while utilizing the latest techniques in imaging, radiology, and genetics. Our emergency team provides 24/7 availability while working with referring providers to coordinate integrated care plans for our patients.
  • Atrial Fibrillation Center. Using the most sophisticated cardiac diagnostic imaging technologies, therapies, and advanced treatments, our AF center treats this condition which is characterized by an irregular (often rapid) heart rate that results in poor blood flow. Through our expert guidance, our patients can reduce their risk of stroke and enjoy a higher quality of life.
  • Cardiac Diagnostic Testing. Through a combination of imaging, non-imaging, and laboratory tests, we offer our patients the most advanced technologies and techniques to detect a variety of cardiovascular conditions and thoracic disorders. Our diagnostic tests include electrophysiology testing, studying the electrical properties of biological cells and tissues to diagnose the cause and specific location of the issue. Devices and techniques in this field include:
    • Implantable cardiac defibrillators
    • Pacemakers
    • Loop recorders
    • Cardiac ablation
    • Cardioversion
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. By helping our patients take active roles in improving their heart health, our rehabilitation program offers supervised lifestyle and exercise guidance to aid our patients’ wellness journeys. Instrumental in fostering improved lifestyle practices, our program is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and The Joint Commission (TJC).
  • CardioMEMS Cardiac Monitoring Program. This program allows patients to transmit data from homes to their health care providers using the CardioMEMS Heart Failure (HF) System, which is a miniature wireless monitoring sensor implanted in the pulmonary artery that directly measures blood pressure and heart rate data. Through the use of this device, our providers are better able to assess, and therefore more effectively stabilize the patient's blood pressure through effective medication management.
  • Cardiac Surgery. Our multidisciplinary cardiac team excels in diagnosing and treating all cardiac valve syndromes and disorders using the latest tools and technologies. Our procedures include both traditional open-heart surgeries and minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. Minimally invasive techniques are performed by making a number of small incisions into the heart, as opposed to the traditional open-heart surgery, aiding in shortened recovery times.
  • Cardio-Oncology Program. In collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, we offer one of the few Cardio-Oncology programs in the region. For patients with pre-existing heart disease, we also take proactive steps to detect, monitor, and treat cardiac conditions throughout a patient’s treatment. This continues after therapy as part of our patients’ survivorship plan, utilizing advanced imaging, electrophysiology, and laboratory evaluations.
  • Heart Disease in Women. Our Heart Disease in Women Program combines an unparalleled level of expertise comprising a full range of diagnostic, treatment and support services for our female patients.
  • Heart Rhythm Disorders Program. Our program provides innovative, multispecialty care for patients with irregular heart rhythms, heart palpitations and rapid heartbeats. From evaluation to treatment, this unique program delivers the best possible outcomes for every patient–with compassion and care.
  • Structural Heart Disease Program. CBMC’s Structural Heart Disease Program provides inventive, multi-specialty care for patients who suffer from complex valvular and/or structural heart disease. We are able to provide traditional open-heart procedures, and less-invasive procedures whenever possible. Some of these procedures include:
  • Thoracic Surgery Program. Using the latest advancement and treatment options for disorders of the chest, lung, esophagus, trachea, pleura (the lining of the chest), and mediastinum (the middle section of the chest), our nationally-recognized thoracic specialists perform the most advanced surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.
  • Valve Center. Our experienced Valve Center provides the pinnacle in collaborative care. We offer a spectrum of valve options, including minimally invasive methods to treat failing aortic heart valves such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement. We perform numerous TAVR surgeries every year.
  • Vascular Care. We are pleased to offer the best vascular care in New Jersey. Our top-rated vascular surgeons, technologists, and specialists use the latest high definition imaging systems, testing options, and equipment to diagnose and treat diseases of the blood vessels, putting our patients’ health needs first.
