What Are Gynecologic Cancers?

All cancers affecting the female genital tract fall under the umbrella of gynecologic cancers. Routine gynecologic cancer screenings are included in regular checkups to increase early detection.

We treat all types of gynecologic cancers, including:

  • Cervical cancer: The cervix is a narrow tube that connects the uterus to the vagina/birth canal. Pap tests/smears are used to detect any precancerous cells before they can advance to the tumor stage. It’s important to see a gynecologist regularly because precancerous lesions of the cervix are often asymptomatic. Patients who do have symptoms may notice unusual bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause. Unusual vaginal discharge or pelvic pain may also indicate a cervical problem.
  • Ovarian cancer: The ovaries are two small, almond-shaped organs located on both sides of the uterus; they store a woman’s eggs from birth. Individuals with early-stage ovarian cancer usually don’t have any symptoms, which makes this cancer harder to detect before it becomes more advanced. Some symptoms may include frequent bloating, difficulty eating and/or quickly feeling full, frequent urgency to urinate, and pain in the abdomen.
  • Uterine/endometrial cancer: The endometrium is the lining of the uterus, and the terms uterine and endometrial cancer are used interchangeably. This type of cancer is relatively easy to detect in the early stages because women usually experience symptoms of abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods. Women who began menstruating before age 12, have never been pregnant, or have a family history of the disease are at greater risk of uterine cancer.
  • Other gynecologic cancers: We treat all forms of gynecologic cancers, including rare types, such as fallopian tube cancer, uterine sarcoma, vulvar cancer and vaginal cancer among others.
