Arrhythmia Center

U.S. News High Performing Hospitals badge for Heart AttackThe Arrhythmia Center is a state-of-the-art resource at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH).

Twelve-lead electrocardiography is used to diagnose a variety of conditions including rhythm disorders and heart attacks.

Signal averaged electrocardiography is helpful in differentiating patients at high risk from those at low risk for dangerous heart rhythm disturbances.

Ambulatory electrocardiography (Holter monitoring) records all heartbeats over a 24-hour period while patients perform their normal daily activities, allowing for evaluation of rhythm disturbances in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

Head upright tilt testing is used to evaluate the cause of light-headedness or loss of consciousness in patients with a history of fainting and can be performed with or without the use of specific adjunctive medications.

In the hospital’s Electrophysiology Studies (EPS) Laboratory, catheters positioned within the heart measure electrical activity and vulnerability of the heart to abnormal rhythms and excessively rapid or slow heart rates.

The most advanced models of temporary or permanent pacemakers are available to treat dangerously slow rhythms.

For treatment of abnormal rhythms with excessively rapid heart rates, several solutions are available to be employed by our skilled arrhythmia experts:

  • Medications
  • Transcatheter ablation (using heat energy to interrupt an electrical connection)
  • Kmplantable cardioverter defibrillator (electrical shock) devices

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital also offers minimally invasive surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation.
