PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital

Founded in 1891, Children’s Specialized Hospital is the nation’s leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care for children from birth to 21 years of age with special health needs—from chronic illnesses and complex physical disabilities, such as brain and spinal cord injuries, to developmental and behavioral issues such as autism and mental health. With 13 convenient New Jersey locations and more developmental behavioral pediatricians than any children’s hospital in the country, Children’s Specialized Hospital is a trusted partner for parents who want to have an active role in helping their children achieve the best possible outcome.

Children’s Specialized Hospital was created in Westfield, NJ, to give summer respite to the impoverished children living in nearby cities. Known then as Children’s Country Home, Children’s Specialized Hospital’s care evolved to meet the ever‐changing needs of the community. In the early 1940s, the hospital began treating children afflicted by the polio epidemic. In 1962, Children’s Country Home officially became Children’s Specialized Hospital to better reflect the nature of the work being done. The change in name marked the start of what has become the continuous growth of services for children with special health needs.

In 2007, the state‐of‐the‐art PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital, a 68‐bed pediatric acute‐inpatient rehabilitation hospital, was opened on the campus of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital is adjacent to the Bristol‐Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Child Health Institute, creating an unparalleled synergy among the efforts of acute care physicians, rehabilitation experts, and research scientists. For the first time in the state, children and families have access to acute care, rehabilitation, and research on one campus, enabling children to move seamlessly through their recovery.

Children’s Specialized Hospital has been serving children with special health care needs for 125 years. The hospital is dedicated to providing the highest quality specialty health care and helping each child reach their full potential.
