Emergency Medicine Residency

Welcome to the Newark Beth Israel Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Shelley Jones-Dillon, MD, FACEPNewark Beth Israel (NBI) Emergency Medicine Residency Program is an ACGME-accredited program that is located in the heart of Newark, New Jersey. The primary site for the residency is Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Affectionately called "The Beth" it is a high-acuity, quaternary care center encompassing over 650 inpatient hospital beds. Each year, the emergency department sees over 90,000 patients and boasts an admission rate of about 15%. The Department of Emergency Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is a large, independent, academic department that is home to four post-graduate emergency medicine training programs: our flagship Emergency Medicine Residency Program, and our advanced fellowships in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Emergency Ultrasound and Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine.

Our residency in emergency medicine is committed to scholarship, leadership and teamwork, as well as care centered on both the patient and the community. Our goal is to train our residents to be adept, caring, and compassionate physicians who have the necessary skills to effectively manage the dynamic and challenging world of emergency medicine. This includes fostering and nurturing our physician’s interpersonal skills, professionalism, leadership, and empathy, with respect for the individual as a core value. We are committed to providing our physicians with the best possible training in “the art and science” of emergency medicine so that they can bring that training to bear in their interaction with our patients, the local community, and beyond.

The training we provide at Newark Beth Israel is highly comprehensive, evidence-based and cutting edge. Our residents also get the opportunity to train at University Hospital in Newark, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and Jersey City Medical Center. Our faculty is dedicated and committed to providing excellence in training and patient care. Because of their skillful supervision and supportive mentorship, combined with our structured didactic, innovative and experiential curriculum, our graduates are more than prepared to excel in their careers. We can’t wait for you to see that for yourself!
