Medication-Use Safety and Policy Residency

The Medication-Use Safety and Information Center (MUSIC) is a collaborative effort of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Rutgers University – Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

Program Goals

The primary goal of the program is to develop practitioners capable of serving as experts in medication safety, medication-use policy, formulary management, and drug/medical information practice. Our core mission is to provide the PGY2 MUSP resident with opportunities to:

  • Participate in a broad range of medication management experiences with an emphasis in medication safety and medication-use policy including formulary management and implementation, drug shortage management, fostering a culture of safety, evaluating and reporting adverse drug reactions and medication errors, quality improvement, and provision of drug information.
  • Develop skills in critical literature evaluation, evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary committee coordination, pharmacy informatics, and clinical research.
  • Enhance leadership and academic skills through co-precepting pharmacy students and delivering didactic education at the School of Pharmacy.

Upon completion of this program, the resident will be prepared to enter a variety of positions related to MUSP practice. A resident who successfully completes an accredited PGY2 MUSP Residency should possess the skills needed to excel in the following positions: medication safety pharmacist, clinical specialist in Drug Information, pharmacy school faculty member, coordinator/manager of Drug/Medical Information Services, medical writer/editor/content development, or formulary manager/specialist. Additionally, upon completion of the PGY2 program, the resident shall possess competencies that enable attainment of board certification (i.e., BCPS).
