RWJBarnabas Health Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship

The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a paid, 18-month postgraduate training program from RWJBarnabas Health. This is the first emergency medicine fellowship of its kind in New Jersey. It combines a rigorous training schedule with education and support for advanced practice providers.

The program is open to highly qualified, board-certified physician assistants (PAs) and board-certified nurse practitioners (NPs).

Goals

The RWJBH Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship aims to provides a comprehensive and immersive experience that ensures the highest levels of competency and proficiency for emergency medicine advanced practice providers. The goals of the Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship are to:

  • Train highly qualified APPs to provide high-level care across the entire emergency medicine spectrum
  • Encourage open communication and collaboration across the various parts of the health care system
  • Foster personal growth and development
  • Provide mentorship
  • Provide training in commonly encountered procedures performed in emergency medicine including training in advanced line placement and airway management, point of care ultrasound instruction, and much more

Curriculum

All APP fellows will follow a strict curriculum consisting of clinical rotations, didactic and simulation experiences, as well as routine evaluations.

Didactic Experiences

APP fellows will attend didactic sessions including:

  • Weekly emergency medicine conferences
  • Monthly in-person small group didactic sessions provided by specialty experts in addition to small group breakout sessions
  • Intermittent structured lectures with subspecialty experts
  • Specialty conferences throughout the year

Sessions will include:

  • Case study presentations
  • Journal discussions
  • Diagnostic interpretation (for example, image review)
  • Simulation

Advanced Certification

Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Certification

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification

Rotations

All participants will have access to textbooks and learning resources for all rotations. Each rotation includes objectives, quizzes and evaluations. Rotations vary from 2 to 4 weeks in length at various sites throughout the RWJBarnabas Health system.

Rotations include:

  • Emergency Department (Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Community Medical Center, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus)
  • Observation Medicine
  • Pediatric Emergency Department
  • Medical/Surgical ICU
  • Neuro ICU
  • Trauma
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery/Plastic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Optional Electives

Simulation

Each APP fellow will receive dedicated simulation time via various simulation modalities throughout the fellowship.

Evaluations

APP fellows will be evaluated during each rotation in addition to receiving formative and summative feedback. Fellows will also have and quarterly meetings with the program director/medical director or designee to discuss clinical progress and career planning. Additionally, the APP fellows will be asked to provide feedback regarding their rotation, didactic and fellowship experiences.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick, New Jersey will serve as the home base for the Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship. During the 18-month program, the APP fellows will also be assigned to rotations at multiple hospitals throughout the RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH) system to achieve a vast and all-encompassing emergency medicine educational experience within New Jersey's largest health care system.

Eligibility

To apply for the RWJBarnabas Health Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship, you must have or be in the process of completing the following requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited master’s degree program for physician assistants or accredited master’s degree program in nursing with an acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) specialty
  • Be eligible for or have a national board certification in acute care by the start of the program from a national certifying organization such as:
    • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
    • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
    • American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)
  • Be eligible for or have a current license and certificate to practice as an ACNP or PA in the State of New Jersey by the start of the program
  • Flexibility to work various shifts (nights, weekends, and 40- to 60-hour work week), ability to attend lectures and clinical rotations
  • Be eligible for or have an active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate and Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license in the State of New Jersey

Stipend

  • $85,000 stipend for the 12-month program
  • Work weeks span from 40 to 60 hours a week
  • All APP fellows are eligible to receive full employee benefits options, including 4 weeks of paid vacation
