PGY - 2 Rotations

General Medicine Faculty Service

Duration: 1 Block (4 weeks/block)

With the guidance of a teaching internist, PGY-2 residents gain experience running a general medicine in-patient service and supervising 2 PGY-1 residents and 1-2 medical students.

General Medicine Hospitalist Service

Duration: 2 Blocks (4 weeks/block)

With the guidance of private attendings and hospitalists, PGY-2 residents gain experience running a general medicine in-patient service and supervising 2 PGY-1 residents and 1-2 medical students.

Intensive Care Unit - Day / Night

Duration: 1 Block (2 weeks ICU-Days/2 weeks ICU-Nights)

PGY-2 residents gain experience in the emergent management of critically-ill patients while supervising 2 PGY-1 residents. Attending intensivists are available 24/7 to supervise the ICU learning experience.

Emergency Department

Duration: 2x 0.5 Blocks

Description: Residents work one-on-one with ED physicians to evaluate untriaged patients with undiagnosed symptoms, prioritize care and stabilize patients. Residents are also expected to discern which patients can be discharged and which can require admissions. Residents may also perform bedside procedures like lumbar punctures, thoracentesis, paracentesis, central lines, and endotracheal intubation.

Night Float

Duration: 2x 0.5 Blocks

Description: Residents go on night float six days per week, from 8:30 PM to 7:00 AM daily. Night admissions are signed out formally to the morning teams to ensure appropriate transitions of care.

Geriatrics and Rehabilitation

Duration: 1 Blocks (4 weeks)

Description: Residents gain experience in the acute in-patient management and outpatient care of common geriatric disorders and specific geriatric syndromes. Residents also gain exposure to rehabilitation and management of geriatric patients at nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, assisted living, and long-term care centers.
