Academic Resources

In addition to the various medical learning activities incorporated into the residency program, medical residents also enjoy the following educational benefits:

Patient Simulation Facilities

The simulation lab with Sim Man 2.0 is available for training for a broad spectrum of clinical procedures and critical events such as Code scenarios and Rapid Responses. Residents are trained as a team. This training mode encourages team participation and assists in developing confidence in performing these scenarios in the clinical setting. Training modules for point-of-care ultrasound and central line placement are also available in the Intensive Care Unit. Mock code simulations are often run to improve residents' proficiency.

Onsite Library

Monmouth Medical Center has an onsite medical library accessible to residents at all times. Textbooks (old school) and online resources are available onsite to be used, or they may be borrowed for home use. A weekday librarian is onsite to assist in literature searches and obtaining educational resources.

Journal and Textbook Access

As a teaching affiliate of Rutgers - RWJ Medical School, medical residents are given remote access to the extensive electronic journals, textbooks, and database of the Rutgers Medical Library. These subscriptions include but are not limited to:

  • McGraw-Hill's Access Medicine (includes Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine online)
  • Elsevier-Saunder's MD Consult (includes Goldman's Cecil Medicine online)
  • Elsevier-Saunder's Clinical Key
  • Wolters-Kluwer’s OVID SP
  • JAMA
  • New England Journal of Medicine

Residents are encouraged to register accounts and remote access these resources at their convenience from home and across all platforms.

Electronic Medical Records

At Monmouth Medical Center, the EPIC EMR combines electronic medical records and computerized physician order entry. The residents utilize this EMR program for all medical documentation. The EMR can be accessed from all hospital computer terminals and remotely from home.

UpToDate

UpToDate is the premier evidence-based clinical decision support resource authored by physicians to help health care practitioners make the best decisions at the point of care. UpToDate is available from all computer terminals inside the hospital. Medical residents are also given home access to this resource on personal mobile devices.

Annual In-Training Exam

The Internal Medicine In-Training Examination allows residents to self-assess and identify areas in which residents may need additional study. Each medical resident takes the ACP IM-ITE yearly, usually in August.

Certifications

Necessary medical certifications, including BLS and ACLS and New Jersey Training Permit Application, are provided for all residents at Monmouth Internal Medicine as part of the residency program.

Memberships

Professional organization membership (American College of Physicians) dues are available for all residents through residency funding.

Board Review

In addition to three years of medical experience, as well as medical library resources and conferences provided through the Internal Medicine Residency Program, the following additional resources are available at no cost to the residents in preparing for the ABIM Board Exams:

  • ACP's Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP): This resource gives residents a concise review of essential internal medicine topics by subspecialty. It also allows them to test their knowledge and compare their results with national averages.
  • Off-Site Board Review Course: Each PGY-3 is encouraged to complete a 1-week board review course. Residents attend the Awesome ABIM Review Course under Dr. Habeeb Rahman. This course has been well received by the previous residency classes.
