A Message from Our Clerks

“In August of 2020, I had the pleasure of being the first clerk at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. I had a tremendous student experience at the hospital. With 34 attendings on staff, there was no shortage of cases to see. Some of the cases I was able to scrub into included a Charcot reconstruction, Giant cell tumor excision, EDL tendon lengthening, several elective 1st ray procedures, ankle arthroscopies, and Achilles’ tendon repair – just to name a few.

Another highlight of the program was my experience at the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine, located inside the hospital. It provided excellent exposure to the most novel treatments for vascular insufficiencies and diabetic foot ulcers.

The program director, Dr. Vincent Migliori, is on staff at Ocean County Foot and Ankle Surgical Associates, P.C. With 6 offices and 14 providers in the Ocean County area, the opportunity for clinical exposure is abundant.

Toms River is also in the heart of Ocean County, a diverse and densely populated area of New Jersey. As such, the patient population represents a broad cross section of society, including individuals from a wide spectrum of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This lends itself to a variety of pathologies and can only bolster the student learning experience. Additionally, the famous beaches of the Jersey shore are only a 12 minute drive away from the hospital.

Although the program is in its infancy, my experience was comparable to other well established programs. If you are looking for a surgically focused clerkship, without compromising on wound care or other aspects of Podiatric medicine – Community Medical Center is an excellent choice for an aspiring student doctor. ”
