Learning Objectives- Upon completion of this activity the participant should be able to:

1. Discuss the role of the surgeon, health care team, and system in providing optimum health care and avoiding medical errors.
2. Develop the ability to identify critical events and error, and a classification for such problems as human error, patient error, systems error, etc.
3. Discuss surgical decision making paradigms and the issues surrounding medical ethics, end of life, and palliative care.
