    Sergio Waxman, MD, MBA, serves as the Division Director of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Waxman received his medical degree from the Universidad Anahuac in his native Mexico City. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine as well as fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology at the New England Deaconess Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology and earned an MBA degree from Babson College in 2015, where he graduated summa cum laude.

    Most recently, Dr. Waxman was Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, and was the Associate Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, as well as Director of the Interventional Cardiology Training Program and Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA.

    An accomplished clinician in the area of Interventional Cardiology with over 20 years of experience, he has over 70 published papers and book chapters, and has been granted three patents, two of them for a novel method to access the pericardial space for therapeutic purposes and another for an imaging method to detect vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. He has participated in over 40 single-center and multicenter clinical trials and a number of preclinical studies as former Director for the Center for Cardiovascular Translational Research at Tufts Medical Center. Some of his pioneering work led to the development and commercialization of two different intracoronary imaging modalities, near infrared spectroscopy and optical frequency domain imaging, for which he performed the first-in-man studies.

    Dr. Waxman participates in several national committees, including chairing many Clinical Event Adjudication Committees and Data and Safety Monitoring Boards. He is a former member of the Executive Council of the Interventional Training Standards and Program Director’s Committee of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and current member of the Board of Appeals Panel for Internal Medicine-Interventional Cardiology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
