Dr. Paul Hahn, a New York City native and pioneering eye surgeon, returned to the northeast in 2016 to join the medical staff at Clara Maass Medical Center and the advanced eye care team at NJRetina.

Dr. Hahn attended Harvard University where he was awarded the Detur Prize for Academic Achievement of the Highest Distinction – awarded to top 5-10% of first- year students based on academic merit—the John Harvard Scholarship for academic excellence. He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in Biochemical Sciences. He then followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both ophthalmologists, and completed his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was sponsored by the National Institute of Health for completion of his MD, along with a PhD degree in molecular pharmacology investigating novel treatment pathways for dry age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Hahn then completed his ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at Duke University.

After he completed his fellowship, Dr. Hahn remained at Duke University as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke’s medical school for nearly four years, where he gained experience in managing the full range of eye conditions, including the most complex of complications.

As a surgeon at Duke University Eye Center, Dr. Hahn developed an interest in next-generation treatments and cutting edge technologies. This led him to found the Duke Center for Artificial and Regenerative Vision, where he served as director. It was here that Dr. Hahn first implanted the Argus II—a retinal prosthesis system that is often called a bionic eye. This was the first robotic eye ever implanted in the Southeast, and only the seventh time it had been done in the entire United States. The surgery helps restore vision in people with the degenerative disease retinosa pigmentosa. This groundbreaking surgery caught the attention of local, national, and international media, with stories about Dr. Hahn’s pioneering surgery published around the world.
