The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital (BMSCH) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, in conjunction with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), offers children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders the most advanced, comprehensive pediatric oncology and hematology program in the state of New Jersey.
State-of-the-Art Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Services
The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program offers state-of-the-art approaches to pediatric cancer care and the treatment of blood disorders using sophisticated techniques in diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of health care providers that includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, counselors, social workers, case managers, pharmacists, child life specialists, nutritionists and other health care providers who are devoted to the diagnosis, treatment and care of children with cancer and blood disorders.
Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Research
As a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a full member of the Children’s Oncology Group, Rutgers CINJ offers access to clinical trials, many of which are not available elsewhere.
Our physicians are board-certified and they are accomplished in clinical and laboratory research and devoted exclusively to the diagnosis and care of children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders.
Child-Friendly, Family-Centered Care
All of our patients receive personalized care and attention in an atmosphere that is child-friendly and family-focused. The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit offers private rooms, each with a separate bed for caregivers who wish to stay overnight. Other amenities include internet access, a patient and parent television, DVD, video games, in room refrigerator, playroom and a family sitting area.
To allow our patients to stay current with schoolwork while they are hospitalized and receiving treatments, there is a full time teacher on staff that is supported by the Embrace Kids Foundation. The teaching staff will work with the child, caregivers, and school to provide an individualized academic plan for education needs.
To provide added comfort and support while our patients and families are in the hospital, the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Foundation and the Embrace Kids Foundation provide numerous programs and support to the children and their families being cared for at BMSCH and Rutgers CINJ.
The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program is committed to individualized family-centered care. Pediatric oncology physicians work with the BMSCH Pediatric Advanced Comprehensive Care Team (PACCT) Program to provide individualized care and support to patients and families. PACCT is a unique program that provides a seamless continuity of care from the time of initial diagnosis and throughout the patient’s treatment. This program provides nursing care and psychosocial support for the patients and families when they are at home, by the same health care providers who care for them in the hospital and outpatient clinic.
