New technology at Jacqueline Wilentz Center provides accurate and more comfortable mammograms.

For women who live or work in western Monmouth County, screening mammograms just got easier and better. Breast specialists at Monmouth Medical Center’s Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Colts Neck offer new technology to provide some of the best images of breast tissue available. This makes it easier for specialists to identify abnormal tissue and rule out cancer, or to find it as early as possible.

Further, women who have dense breast tissue find the new equipment, called the Genius 3D Mammography with SmartCurve technology, to be especially effective and more comfortable—thanks to the rounded design of the compression device—when compared with traditional mammography.

Cynthia Barone, D.O. and Diane Ciricillo.

“We offer a curved paddle that most women find more comfortable, because it’s more like the natural shape of the breast,” says Diane Ciricillo, director of the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center, who adds that the state-of-the-art system allows radiologists to examine beast tissue layer by layer, like the pages of a book. This advanced design reduces pinching and allows uniform compression over the entire breast.

Research shows that more than nine out of 10 women who felt discomfort with the standard “flat” surface paddle used with other mammogram equipment find SmartCurve more comfortable. Studies also show that the 3D tomosynthesis is more accurate than 2D alone. It’s also the only mammogram that the FDA approves as being superior for women with dense breasts, according to the manufacturer.

Studies also show that this system might also lower a woman’s chance of being called back for follow-up testing, which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

TIME FOR A SCREENING MAMMOGRAM?
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
So the experts at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center and Monmouth Medical Center want to offer you some reminders:

  • If you’re a woman in her 40s, have a screening mammogram every year.
  • Only about 1 in 10 women with breast cancer have a family history of it. So get your screening as scheduled.
  • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) detect 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces callbacks by up to 40 percent. But remember, if we call you back for additional imaging, it does not mean you have breast cancer.
  • At the Wilentz Center, we utilize a software to create a 2D image from your 3D imaging without any additional radiation.
  • We also have earned some of the highest quality measures for breast centers.
  • When we catch breast cancer early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent.
