NEWARK, NJ ( June 1, 2019) — On Saturday, June 1, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey hosted its 7th Annual Women’s Health Day at the Newark Airport Marriott Hotel.

More than 600 women attended the event, which included a one-on-one interview with U.S. Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr., (10th District-NJ), and guest host and moderator, WABC-TV Eyewitness News reporter and anchor Toni Yates.

“Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., understands the importance of empowering our residents with the information and the tools they need to improve their health. It is an honor to welcome him to our annual Women’s Health Day event and work with him to raise awareness about Type 2 Diabetes, an illness that is impacting so many people in Newark and across the state of New Jersey,” said Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA, MPH, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey.

Congressman Payne Jr., spoke candidly about his health and personal struggle to manage Type 2 Diabetes over the past 20 years.

“As someone who lives with diabetes, I make it a priority to share my story with people throughout the state so that they too understand the seriousness of this disease. I am vocal on the importance of managing diabetes through diet, physical activity and the appropriate use of medication,” says, Congressman Payne.

The panel consisted of doctors from Newark Beth Israel Medical Center: Patricia Williams-Bennett, DPM (Podiatry), Laura Budinick, PsyD (Behavioral Health), Christina Migliore, MD (Transplant Pulmonology), Johanny Garcia, MD (Family Medicine), Anisha Sehgal, DMD (Dentistry), and Yvonne Wright-Cadet, MD (Obstetrics & Gynecology). They also fielded questions from the audience, which covered a range of women’s health issues including reproductive health, behavioral health, dental health, foot care, asthma and lung disease, and family health issues.

Attendees were offered free health screenings, healing massage treatments and participated in fitness demonstrations. In addition, Dr. Anshu Garg, MD, NBIMC cardiologist, held a breakout session on cardiac health.

Newark Beth Israel’s Women’s Health Day event was supported by generous gifts from the Jane D’Onfrio Family Foundation and Investors Bank. Both donors will help Newark Beth Israel further the Women’s Health Day mission of empowering women to better health.
