Jun 26, 2019 Listen up, Men: 5 Things to Start Doing and 1 Thing to Stop Doing for Your Health

Men’s health is just as important as women’s health, and yet statistically, health is not nearly as much of a focus for men as it is for women. Many men cite not having the time as a reason for avoiding doctors as well as practicing good nutrition and exercise. But what men may not be thinking about is that an investment in your own health is an investment in much more – including time with loved ones and career longevity and success – because you can increase your quality of life and your mortality by choosing to monitor your life and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Real men take the time to do these five things to better their overall health and well-being:

  • Schedule annual physician checkups and schedule important screenings, such as prostate screenings, as appropriate for their age.
  • Consume at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
  • Drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day and drink less soda and beer.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Take care of their mental health – whether it be through meditation, professional counseling, or practicing stress-free approaches to daily living.

Men’s Health Myth Buster
Myth:
“I need to consume protein supplements, like protein powder and protein bars, in order to gain the muscles I desire.”
Truth: Americans tend to consume more than double their suggested protein intake for the day, as it is, without supplements. Most men do not need to consume more than 56 grams of protein a day. Exceptions are made for super sport athletes and professional body builders, but even if you are a man who exercises regularly, you do not need to consume more than 56 grams a day. Those 56 grams of protein can easily be achieved through a diet of whole foods, including lean meats, poultry, whole grains, legumes and dairy.
Summary: Stay away from protein supplements and instead focus on getting your protein intake from whole foods.
