The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey (HFNJ) recently awarded Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) $1 million to support the significant enlargement and transformation of health care delivery in the Emergency Department. This gift was one of their largest awards in 2019. HFNJ funding will be used specifically to expand the size of the department’s observation unit to 22 beds and purchase movable clinical, patient monitoring, and nursing equipment.

“We are grateful to the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey for their continuous support and assistance with the transformation of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center campus and expansion of our Emergency Department,” says Stephen P. Zieniewicz, FACHE, President and CEO, SBMC. “This transformation is part of the ongoing campus enhancements to address the evolving needs of our patients and the community for the future.”

Launched in 2018, the 25,000 square foot Saint Barnabas Medical Center Emergency Department transformation will accommodate 130,000 visits per year. With half of the inpatient admissions coming from the Emergency Department, this vital front door to the Medical Center has been designed to exceed the community’s expectations for decades to come. During the expansion, the SBMC Emergency Department will continue to provide the community with the care and service they have come to expect from an outstanding emergency medicine team.

The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has partnered with Saint Barnabas Medical Center to make many enhancements over the years. Generous grants have supported various departments throughout the Medical Center including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, The Burn Center and Oncology Services, improving access to quality healthcare for the SBMC community.
