Trinitas physician receives award at EMS Symposium
The Sixth Annual Trinitas Emergency and Trauma Care Symposium was held on April 13 at Kean University in Union.
Each year, the Symposium honors those who work around the clock to save lives by recognizing their accomplishments and offers continuing education credits for Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Registered Nurses and Emergency Physicians. This year, there were 228 participants.
"This event is designed to help emergency medical personnel improve their professional performance in the field," says Gerard Muench, RN, MICP, and Director of Pre-Hospital Services. "This year, we're grateful to the Trinitas Healthcare Foundation for their generous grant, which makes this event possible."
This year's EMS "Physician of the Year" award was presented to Dr. Raffee Matossian, who has been an Emergency Room physician since 1980. As the MICU medical director, he oversees the paramedic program at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. In his role of medical director of the Trinitas-sponsored Paramedic Training Program at Union College, he demonstrates his extensive knowledge of the state regulations concerning the day-to-day operations of the paramedic program, while maintaining current certifications in ACLS, ATLS and PALS.
"It was an unexpected surprise and honor to be considered and ultimately chosen by my colleagues to receive this award," says Dr. Matossian, a Westfield resident. "We don't treat patients with efficiency or speed or accuracy for the sake of this kind of recognition, but it is nice to be appreciated."
The EMS Agency of the Year went to Roselle Fire EMS, and the following awards were also given to: ALS Provider of the Year, Paul Markinson; BLS Provider of the Year, Leodis Lumsden; and Emergency Department RN of the Year, Nathalie Bonhamme.
"We are very honored to receive this prestigious award from Trinitas Regional Medical Center," said Roselle Fire Chief Paul Mucha to Tap Into editor Kathy Lloyd. "They have always been a fantastic partner in the field of Emergency Medical Services."
