May 3, 2018 Don't Let Allergy Season Keep You Away From Exercising

Spring is here, making it a wonderful time of year to take advantage of outdoor workouts. However, when you have allergies, exercising outdoors can be a challenge. Try a few of these tips to help you manage your allergies and still get exercise.

  1. Know Pollen Levels – There are different readings for different types of pollen and are rated throughout the day. Check The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology’s site to learn more.
  2. Watch The Clock – Different allergens can peak at different times during the day. Plan to workout when the allergen counts are lower. If you do go outside when it is high, wear a face mask and rinse your nose with saline.
  3. Watch The Sky – Avoid exercising on dry, warm and windy days which can lead to high pollen levels. High humidity can also make it harder to breathe.
  4. Listen To Your Body – If you are experiencing any side effects or fatigue in general or maybe from medication you are taking, limit your workouts to indoors.
  5. Take Your Meds Before Sneezing Begins – If you’re prone to allergies each spring, don’t wait until you have symptoms to take your allergy medicine, start taking it a few weeks before the season begins. Talk with your pharmacist or physician before taking any prescription or over the counter medications.
