Jan 26, 2018 CMMC Embodies the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Volunteerism

Clara Maass Medical Center joined employees across the RWJBarnabas Health for a Week of Service in memory of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. held January 15-19, 2018. Organized in partnership with Jersey Cares, Inc. Clara Maass Medical Center along with more than 400 employees from RWJBarnabas Health who made a difference by volunteering for various community projects at 26 sites across the State of New Jersey.

On January 16th, Clara Maass Medical Center presented two workshops focused on science and technology to students at Newark’s Rafael Hernandez Elementary School and at Bellville High School. In Newark, Clara Maass Medical Center’s President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Ellen Clyne, PhD joined by various members of the management team presented two workshops to students in grades 3-6. The first workshop, ‘STEM Stars in Newark’ provided students with instruction about the fundamentals of 3-D printing technology through the use of a 3Doodler pen with stencils and puzzle pieces used to draw and create name stands with plastic. A second workshop, ‘Fling With Physics!’ was led by Jose Fernandez, Director of Radiology at CMMC, and familiarized students with the science of catapults (commonly used in the Middle Ages). Through the workshop, students learned how energy can be stored, transferred and converted by creating a catapult that, when accumulates tension, can be suddenly released to hurl an object across a distance. As students assembled the catapult using plastic spoons, rubber bands and popsicle sticks, they then formed teams and tested the catapults through a fun-filled competition that included a marshmallow-launching contest.

At Belleville High School, CMMC staff presented a career readiness and financial literacy workshop using the FDIC’s Money Smart curriculum to assist and guide students in forming ideas about future careers, providing interview tips, conducting mock interviews, and group coaching to educate students about preparing household budget, the value of credit cards and an over view of loans.
