Lives will surely be saved thanks to a recent grant from the Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery that has allowed Trinitas Regional Medical Center to purchase five new Motorola APX 6000 portable radios for its Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
These radios will be used to communicate with the Union County Police Dispatch Center, which dispatches MICUs and ambulances throughout Union County. In addition, the radios can be used to communicate with a number of Union County police departments, fire departments and other agencies on the State Police radio system.
According to Gary S. Horan, FACHE, Trinitas President and Chief Executive Officer, recent upgrades to the County radio system hindered the reception quality of the radios at Trinitas.
"This generous act by Phillips 66 will now allow for clearer communication with local and County emergency and law enforcement bodies," he explained. "With five new radios, we now have at least one office-based radio and several others in the field when our response teams are out on multiple calls."
Refinery Manager Mike Bukowski said, "Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery is proud to support projects that are aligned with our commitment to improving safety and preparedness in our local communities."
This donation is not the first enhancement made by Phillips to Trinitas' emergency readiness. Nadine Brechner, Chief Development Officer, noted, "In recent years, Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery served as the major donor behind a new, high-tech specialty ambulance that provides a higher level of transport for critically ill patients."
In 2017, the ambulance, known as a Specialty Care Transport Unit, was dispatched to more than 1,200 calls. "This has resulted in more than 600 patients being transported as an emergency MICU paramedic call, and has facilitated more than 300 inter-facility transports of critically ill patients," Brechner explained.
Horan added, "We salute the Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery for continually working to enhance our ability to respond to the health care needs of our community. They are a valued partner in helping us provide community safety and emergency preparedness services to the residents of Union County."
