Oct 17, 2015 Free Mammogram Leads to Crucial Diagnosis for Uninsured Woman

For decades the generous grant funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation has enabled RWJUH to provide breast care services to a variety of underserved populations in Middlesex County. Funds have allowed us to provide free mammogram screenings as well as bilingual interpreters to reach populations who otherwise would not receive adequate preventive or follow-up care. For example, recently a Trinidadian woman in her mid-50s received a free mammogram screening. She was uninsured and had never received a breast health exam before. Her mammogram came back with positive results, and she was diagnosed with Bi-Rad 4 in both breasts. She needed to undergo a biopsy of both her breasts. With the assistance of community partners, the Hospital was able to obtain additional financial support for the biopsies. Without that crucial free screening service funded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, she would never have received the care she needed.
