Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.

Common occupational therapy treatments at the ACC include helping adult individuals with injuries or disabilities to participate fully in daily life skills such as dressing, writing, cooking, as well as providing support for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Occupational therapy services typically include:

  • an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,
  • customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and to reach their goals
  • customized home exercise program

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual’s ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations.

Hand Occupational therapy services typically include:

  • an individualized evaluation of the upper limb and relevant patient characteristics,
  • customized intervention to prevent, improve or restore function of the upper limb , improve/adapt the person’s ability to perform daily activities and to reach their goals
  • customized home exercise program
  • fabrication of customized orthotics for the upper limb to protect, support, correct or improve function
