Comprehensive Geriatric Care at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

Newark Beth Israel is a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders) Exemplar hospital.

The James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers integrated health care services to patients 65 years of age and older. Patients receive coordinated care from a team of experienced geriatricians and medical staff including a social worker, patient navigator, and patient access representative who facilitates coordinated care for each patient with referrals to medical specialists, dieticians, rehabilitative therapists, podiatrists, optometrists, audiologists, psychologists, support groups and community agencies. The James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is one of three Institutes of its kind within the RWJBarnabas Health system supported by a gift from James and Sharon Maida.

Newark Beth Israel’s geriatric inpatient unit consists of 24 private rooms, spanning 2 floors of the hospital, and is specifically outfitted to meet the unique needs of older adult patients. The new geriatric unit features rooms large enough to accommodate physical therapy activities, beds specifically designed to reduce pressure injuries and reduce fall hazards, cushioned slip resistant flooring, sliding doors to private bathrooms, with bathroom guard rails for ease of access. In addition, select rooms have been outfitted with equipment to support patients who are not ambulatory. The hallways are brightly colored with color blocking patterns that help guide and orient patients. Hallways are also fitted with guardrails, pull out seating, a centralized nursing station and dimmable lighting. The unit also features wheelchair accessible family visitor lounges.

Named in honor of the late congressman, the Donald M. Payne, Sr., Geriatric Emergency Department offers a comfortable environment devoted to the complex needs of our senior patients. The department’s serene environment coupled with wider stretchers, thicker mattresses, non-glare/non-slip flooring, specialized lighting and comfortable bedside chairs support the best in emergency care for our senior patients who often undergo more extensive testing than younger patients.
