What Do the Kidneys Do?

Your kidneys are responsible for sorting waste products and balancing chemicals in the body. Every day, quarts of blood are filtered in the kidneys to remove urine and transfer it to the bladder. Chemicals and nutrients your body needs, such as sodium and potassium, are kept in the blood and balanced by the kidneys to keep the body functioning at optimal efficiency.

Kidneys require pressure to do their job, and it is partially responsible for regulating blood pressure. The kidney can send signals to the body to increase or lower blood pressure as needed. Kidneys are also responsible for the production of erythropoietin, a protein that creates red blood cells.
